FP McCann has recently manufactured and fitted an 11 metre high precast concrete twin box section lift shaft as part of a new hotel build in Witney, Oxfordshire. The twin shaft supplied from the company’s Byley factory in Cheshire, has been installed by FP McCann’s precast specialist fitting team. As one of the country’s most popular value hotel brands, Travelodge recently secured the site in Witney and in partnership with Worcestershire based construction company the Hinton Group, they have forged a successful track record in delivering high-quality hotel and commercial developments across the UK.
The 63 bedroom three storey hotel is well under construction and integral within the steel frame is the precast box section lift shaft. Comprising of 1 pit, 3 main sections and 2 smaller spacer sections, plus a capping slab, the completed shaft including pit weighs 63 tonnes with external dimension 10935mm high x 4330mm wide x 2000mm deep. The lift shaft walls were 150mm thick and each lift door opening measures 1200mm. The three storey box section lift shaft was installed in just seven separate lifts over one day by FP McCann’s specialist fitting team utilising a 160 tonne capacity crane.
Commenting on FP McCann’s role in the project, Jason Giles Construction Operations Manager for the Hinton Group says, “The precast concrete box section twin lift shaft was installed in just one day without a hitch. To build such a structure using steel formwork and pouring of wet concrete could take days, allowing for curing between stages. Utilising off-site manufactured precast products such as the twin lift shaft has major benefits in terms of productivity and site safety. Also, on this project, the limited space on site meant we needed the lift shaft sections delivered on a just-in-time basis, which the FP McCann distribution team duly did.”
