Natural slate has a distinctive and widely recognised aesthetic, but can be expensive, variable in size, and more brittle on site than concrete. Lead times are often longer due to imports, and dimensional variation can slow roofing sub-contractors during installation.

Slate effect concrete tiles address these issues directly. They replicate the visual appearance of slate while offering consistent sizing, lower cost per m², and shorter lead times from UK manufacture.

For architects, they open up slate aesthetics on projects where natural slate would fall outside budget or project scope. For main contractors and installers, they remove a significant amount of on-site risk.

MINI SLATE CONCRETE ROOF TILES

Our Mini Slate concrete roof tiles are designed to replicate the traditional 20 x 12 small-format slate appearance when laid. The interlocking design includes two nail holes for flexible fixing, and the full accessory range is mechanically fixed to remove the need for mortar bedding.

SL8 CONCRETE ROOF TILES

The SL8 concrete roof tile is a large-format interlocking tile with a thin leading edge that gives a clean, slate-like finish. With market-leading coverage of just 8 tiles per m², it significantly reduces handling and installation time compared to small-format alternatives.

Our Thin Flat concrete roof tile is not specifically a slate effect product, but its thin leading edge and flat profile deliver a slate-like appearance when laid in a half-broken bond. It is a practical option for contemporary specifications that want a clean, uniform finish referencing slate without traditional small-format detailing.

SLATE EFFECT CONCRETE VS NATURAL SLATE – WHAT SPECIFIERS NEED TO KNOW

The core trade-offs between slate effect concrete and natural slate sit across cost, availability, installation, and planning.

Concrete is typically lower in both material cost and installed cost. Consistent dimensions reduce cutting and adjustment on site, which shortens installation programmes and reduces wastage. UK manufacture also removes the lead time risk that often comes with imported natural slate.

Natural slate is lighter per tile but more brittle, which increases handling damage and replacement costs during installation. Concrete tiles are heavier but more robust, and they carry our 15-year product guarantee when specified as part of the full roof offering.

Natural slate may still be required on listed buildings or in some conservation areas where planning authorities specify the material. Slate effect concrete is not a direct substitute in every heritage context, and specifiers should confirm local planning requirements before selecting a material.

SPECIFICATION CONSIDERATIONS FOR ARCHITECTS

Pitch is usually the first factor that narrows tile selection. SL8 works down to 17.5°, which covers most low-pitch new-build applications. Mini Slate starts at 22.5°. Both sit comfortably within typical UK residential pitches.

Aesthetic match is the next decision. Small-format Mini Slate suits designs referencing traditional slate detailing. Large-format SL8 gives a cleaner, more uniform appearance at a lower tile count per m². Thin Flat provides a contemporary alternative where a flat, slate-adjacent finish fits the design intent better than a small-format look.

All three tiles conform to BS EN 490. EPDs are available for Mini Slate and SL8 to support BREEAM credits and embodied carbon reporting. We provide BIM objects, NBS specification clauses, and CAD details through our technical team, and project-specific fixing requirements can be generated through our Online Fixing Specification tool.

INSTALLATION AND FIXING GUIDANCE FOR SUB-CONTRACTORS

Consistent tile dimensions reduce cutting and adjustment on site compared to natural slate, which speeds up installation and reduces waste. SL8 in particular, at 8 tiles per m², significantly reduces handling time on larger roofs.

Mini Slate and SL8 are both fixed using 45mm x 3.35mm aluminium alloy nails. Two nail holes on each tile allow flexible fixing based on wind zone and pitch. Our full accessory range is mechanically fixed, so there is no mortar bedding required at ridges, hips, verges, or valleys.

Roofing contractors should follow the HSE Roof Tiling Guidance (HSG33) when cutting tiles on site, particularly around dust control. Project-specific fixing requirements can be generated using our Online Fixing Specification tool.

SUSTAINABILITY AND COMPLIANCE

EPDs are available for both Mini Slate and SL8, which supports BREEAM credits and embodied carbon reporting under frameworks such as the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard. UK manufacture reduces transport-related emissions compared to imported natural slate.
