CONCRETE ROOF TILE TECHNICAL FAQ’s
Technical FAQ’s
Roof Access
FP McCann strongly advise against any foot traffic directly on our roof tiles during installation. Damage such as cracks and/or micro-cracks may be caused on the roof covering if the tiles are trafficked without the appropriate access equipment.
British Standard BS 8000: Part 6: 1990 ‘Workmanship on building sites’ clearly states that any roof or vertical work in slating or tiling should be ‘treated as fragile’.
The standard recommends that an adequate number of crawling boards and ladders should be used when accessing completed areas of roof, using packing between boards and tiles to avoid any damage.
Storage & Handling
Arrangements should be made for suitable and adequate storage and handling of FP McCann Concrete Roof Tiles in order to avoid any impact in the quality and appearance lead time breakage, and to minimise the possibility of wastage.
- FP McCann Roof Tiles must be stored in a location deemed safe and protected from damage on site. Our pallets must be stored on a smooth area, capable of supporting their weight (1 tonne per pallet of Thin Flat tiles)
- FP McCann Roof Tiles must be transported and repositioned using the correct and appropriate lifting equipment/machinery, i.e. fork lift or mechanical grab. During the unloading process, the tiles must be handled with care to avoid damage and/or breakage.
- FP McCann Roof Tiles are provided palletised, banded, and wrapped.
Loading Out a Roof
- Please check all delivered products against initial order and report any discrepancies or defective materials to your local FP McCann Area Manager before commencing with any work.
- FP McCann recommend that tiles and fittings are laid out on the roof safely. Please ensure that tile stacks are positioned over the rafters to prevent any overloading of the roof structure.
- FP McCann recommend that all tiles to be mixed from different pallet loads whilst loading out the roof to enhance the appearance once tiles are laid and fitted.
Efflorescence
Efflorescence is removed by the natural weathering process due to the acidity in rainwater which over time will dissolve and wash away any of the deposits that have been visible on your roof covering. The removal process can also be assisted by warmer dry weather.
Deposits of Efflorescence on the roof surface are normally expected to disappear within a 6-12 month period and will not reoccur.
Once the removal process is complete, the original colour of the FP McCann Roof Tile will return.

Please consider for a 5% breakage allowance when ordering (breakages that occur from/during transportation within the 5% allowance will not be replaced.)
