Supporting Safer Roof Tile Cutting: FP McCann Welcomes NFRC Silica Guidance
FP McCann welcomes the latest NFRC guidance on controlling silica when disc-cutting roof tiles, which reinforces the importance of reducing exposure to respirable crystalline silica during roofing works.
The guidance highlights that roof tiles are often cut at verges, ridges, hips and valleys, and that disc cutting can generate harmful levels of fine silica dust if not properly controlled. It recommends that contractors reduce cutting wherever possible, use manual cutting methods where suitable, and apply effective water suppression and appropriate respiratory protective equipment when powered cutting is required.
At FP McCann, we recognise that product design and specification can play a practical role in helping contractors reduce unnecessary on-site cutting. Our Gemini Interlocking Concrete Roof Tile offers the traditional appearance of double-cambered plain tiles with the efficiency of a single-lap interlocking format. The range also includes factory-made Tile and a Half and Three-Quarter tiles, helping installers avoid unnecessary site cuts and supporting a cleaner, more efficient installation process.

Gemini is suitable for roof pitches as low as 22.5° and uses approximately 16.2 tiles per m², offering material and labour efficiencies while retaining the appearance of a traditional plain tile roof. The system is UKCA/CE marked, conforms to BS EN 490, and is supported by FP McCann’s full roof offering and 15-year guarantee.
For traditional and vertical applications, FP McCann’s Plain Concrete Roof Tiles provide a durable, through-coloured and low-maintenance option. Designed for vertical tile hanging and traditional aesthetics, the range is also certified to BS EN 490, UKCA/CE marked, and supported by a full range of mechanically fixed accessories and concrete fittings.
As part of our ongoing product development, we see a strong opportunity to support safer, more efficient vertical tiling by introducing factory‑made external angle fittings. These would reduce the need for on‑site cutting, helping to minimise dust, alongside our full range of internal angle fittings available in all colours.
The NFRC guidance is an important reminder that controlling silica exposure is a shared responsibility across the roofing supply chain. By combining good planning, appropriate cutting controls, effective RPE and product choices that reduce avoidable cutting, contractors can better protect workers while improving installation quality and efficiency.
