Products Supplied: Precast concrete reinforced ‘L’ walls 2.0m high
FP McCann’s popular precast concrete ‘L’ Wall system on a new build site in South Wingfield, Derbyshire. Based in a rural setting with many landscape features, the Pearsons Wood View development consists of 32 2-, 3- and 4-bedroom homes.
With notable changes in land elevation across the site, there is a requirement for earth retaining walls. Various in-situ wall options were considered by PTA Development’s engineering team, but the benefits of using FP McCann’s off-site manufactured precast concrete ‘L’ Wall system, far outweighed other engineering solutions.
As well as recognising the significant structural benefits the reinforced precast concrete walling system can offer in earth retaining works, PTA Developments has also adopted the most recent innovative addition to the units, that being the contractor lead application of a tied decorative facing brick or stone finish, adding an aesthetic look to the otherwise plain concrete faces. In the case of the South Wingfield development, the application of a reconstituted stone finish to the ‘L’ Walls mimics the natural Derbyshire limestone evident throughout the village and surrounding area.
The ‘L’ Wall method of earth retention/boundary formation is a simple, fast process and eliminates the need for conventional brickwork or shuttering, steel foundation formwork and the pouring of wet concrete. An additional benefit of the ‘L’ Wall system is that no propping is required during construction. The precast concrete wall acts as a soil retention barrier and once fixed into position on a concrete foundation slab, earth is backed up against the ‘L Walls’ as part of the raised ground levelling work. The off-site quality controlled wet casting of the reinforced concrete ‘L’ Walls ensures a consistent factory finish.
The application of a decorative reconstituted stone or a facing brick cladding to the concrete ‘L’ Wall units themselves is a simple process. Steel tie battens attached to the concrete faces in combination with conventional steel tie bars provide the anchorage system for coverage that is then a quick and easy process. The cladded, reinforced precast concrete ‘L’ Wall combination then offers a long-lasting no maintenance earth retaining wall. To date, FP McCann has supplied some 50 in number of its 2.0 metres high standard precast concrete ‘L’ Walls, delivered from the Company’s manufacturing facility in Grantham, Lincolnshire.
Commenting on the earth retention ‘L’ Walls in place and the addition of the tied reconstituted stone finish, a representative of PTA Developments says, “Speed of construction is a major benefit of the precast ‘L’ Wall system. The precast concrete units are a simple, durable and cost-efficient means of creating an earth retaining structure, allowing us to work confidently with elevation changes on site. The application of the reconstituted stone to the exposed faces of the ‘L’ Walls offers an aesthetically pleasing finish complementing the new builds on site and the existing properties in South Wingfield.”
Standard precast concrete ‘L’ Wall units are available in heights measuring 1.0m to 3.75m from FP McCann’s Lydney, Grantham and Uddingston precast factories and from 4.0m to 6.0m from Byley.
