FP McCann’s Box Culverts utilised at Able Marine Energy Park Humberside

The Able Marine Energy Park (AMEP) is Europe’s largest bespoke port facilities for the Renewable Energy Sector. Located close to Immingham on the south bank of the river Humber, the site occupies an area of approximately 900 acres and will feature around 1.3 kilometres of new deep water quays.

In order to ensure the port has the appropriate transport links, two new access roads are currently being constructed.

Access roads no. 2 and 3 are both crossing drainage ditches on the site which are to be widened as part of an overall drainage improvement scheme. Access road 2 is 8.0m wide and access road 3 is 8.3m wide. Because of the significant vehicle loadings on the access roads, an in situ cast concrete culvert or precast concrete culvert box sections were the only considered options to channel the water beneath. In discussion with FP McCann, Able UK engineers, in conjunction with partnering consultant engineering company MHB, have chosen a precast concrete box culvert design with bespoke wing wall features at the culvert inlet and outlet points.

The first culvert to be constructed beneath Access road No.2 consists of two parallel box section runs around 15 metres long, each section measuring 2500mm wide and 2250mm high. Each individual section is 1850mm long and weighs just over 12 tonnes with a bitumen waterproofing coat applied prior to delivery from FP McCann’s Byley facility in Cheshire.

Additionally, the four end of run units at the culvert inlet and outlet points have threaded anchors cast into them to take the special bespoke headwall ‘wings’, again manufactured at Byley. The headwalls are in excess of 4.5m high and total 32 metres in length, with a combined weight of around 80 tonnes.

The box culvert is seated on a 75mm layer of blinding concrete and from excavation to completion and back fill, it took the Able UK engineers 3 weeks.

Commenting on the culvert installation, Project Manager for Able, John Clay said, “The box culvert team at FP McCann has successfully helped to design an offsite precast concrete solution to manage the natural drainage courses at this location. The units were quickly installed and it demonstrates the flexibility that concrete box culvert sections can offer.”

Access road no.3 culvert is currently under construction. This is a single run precast concrete culvert designed to carry a 2.0m wide drainage ditch beneath the road. The culvert is 46 metres long and 2000mm wide, with an internal height of 2500mm. The precast wing wall units are over 4.0 metres high, 26 metres long and are approximately 70 tonnes in weight.
