FP McCann Wins Transport Project of the Year at 2024 CEF Awards Ceremony

Under the infrastructure Projects of the year award category FP McCann has taken the award for Transport Project of the Year below £10m, at the 2024 Construction Employers Federation awards, for its work on the North West Greenway Network & Pennyburn Bridge.

The project itself saw the lifting into place of the 80t, 63m long and 4m wide Pennyburn foot and cycle bridge, that now connects the new 650m shared pedestrian and cyclist Greenway that runs along the banks of the River Foyle to connect with the existing path network in Bay Road Park.

The bridge was fabricated in Rasharkin Co Antrim by M Hasson & Sons, 40 miles from site. The programming and coordination of bridge design, approvals, fabrication, factory trial build, site delivery and assembly were critical aspects to ensure timings suited the limited and costly bridge lift cranage window booked months in advance for a crane of such magnitude not available on the island of Ireland.

The bridge was installed by a LIEBHER LTM 1800D mobile crane (i.e. 1,000t) operating to 90% capacity, during a small window of opportunity where weather conditions were safe to complete the lift.

From a Health & Safety perspective, zero accidents were recorded during the project, and it has created a now safer environment for the public to use, which includes lighting, separation from traffic, and CCTV.

Balance was achieved between lighting and the environment through a smart LED lighting system to maximise energy efficiency and retain user safety.

The bridge has already become part of the Waterside Half Marathon route, which took place in September 2024. It was the first time that runners took a route across all four of the city’s bridges next to the River Foyle.

The project shows what can be achieved when there is a collaborative approach with all those we were involved with, which included: Derry City & Strabane District Council, McAdam Design, Design ID and M Hassan & Sons Ltd.
