Work is well underway on a key brownfield residential scheme on the site of the former Stonebridge Mills in Farnley, Leeds. The £25 million project will see 82 new homes built and a further 30 properties developed as part of the regeneration of the grade II listed derelict mill itself along with former cottages. The building work on behalf of Rushbond and Advent Developments is being undertaken by West Yorkshire based Caddick Construction and will be complete in summer 2023.
Caddick Construction has employed the services of Castleford groundworks and civil engineering contractor HH Construction to undertake the on-site drainage and roads infrastructure which includes an online storm water attenuation tank to mitigate flood risks on the site. After considering a number of attenuation options, drainage designer Fairhurst specified a 1200 diameter spigot and socket precast concrete pipe tank, with HH Construction then choosing FP McCann’s StormHold™ 100 year design life attenuation system. Sited under the access road to the development, the large diameter reinforced precast concrete StormHold™ tank is designed to LM1 traffic loading criteria.
Unique to the attenuation system are a number of bespoke 1200 diameter side entry manhole bends. These pipe bends are integral to the online system and remove the requirement for separate manhole builds. In total, 9 individual units have been designed to engineering specifications and manufactured at FP McCann’s Ellistown precast factory in Leicestershire. Pipe bends range from 10º to 160º with one unit having an end cap. 150mm diameter pipe inlets are cast into a number of the bends and access steps have been factory fitted down from man access openings.
Commenting on the StormHold™ build, Steve Kelly, Planner for HH Construction says, “After considering alternative pipe systems and taking into account the requirement to install the tanks beneath a road, the use of FP McCann’s 1200dia precast concrete pipes was considered by far the best option. The integral bespoke side entry manhole bends unique in their design, were quickly and safely installed with onsite machinery and have eliminated the requirement for individual manhole builds along the pipe network.”
