On behalf of the Department for Communities (DfC), FP McCann recently completed Public Realm Environmental Improvements along Albert Street and Cullingtree Road. The scheme extended from the junction of Albert Street and Divis St to the end of Albert St at the Westlink Backpath, and along the full length of Cullingtree Road, and incorporating St Peters Close. The scheme was one element of a 3 scheme incentive for the Lower Falls area of Belfast.
The primary focus of the scheme was to enhance the public realm along Albert Street and Cullingtree Road, by introducing a high quality, cohesive appearance to the streetscape. It aimed to create a welcoming sense of arrival to the Albert Street area, by introducing a distinctive style and character to the area, using high quality materials and a consistent approach.
Works commenced August 2021 and working on two consistent work fronts, completed May 2022. The extent of the works included:
Resurfacing of existing footpaths with asphalt, natural stone banding and granite aggregate kerbs; new tree planting, street lighting columns, railings and walls; improvements to the junction of Albert St and Servia St. Improvements to pedestrian crossings, on-street parking and speed control ramps.
Throughout the works and upon completion, the scheme received positive feedback from local residents and community representatives alike.
Following a recent visit to the area Communities Minister Deidre Hargey commented: “I am delighted to see the positive impact this project has had on the quality of daily life for local people and for those who travel in and out of Belfast along this busy route.”

- 1600T Imported aggregates, supplied by Loughside Quarry Depot
- 550m³ Ready Mix Concrete, supplied by Mallusk and Loughside Depots
- 2200T Blacktop materials, supplied by Mallusk Depot
