SUSTAINABLE PRECAST CONCRETE PANEL SOLUTIONS FOR ARCHITECTS

THE IMPORTANCE OF SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION FOR ARCHITECTS

Sustainable construction is now a core consideration for architects across the UK. With planning policy, client expectations and internal environmental policies all pushing for reduced carbon in building projects, architects need solutions that are both practical and sustainable.

Precast concrete panels offer a straightforward way to support sustainable outcomes and improve the environmental performance of a building without compromising on structural integrity or long-term durability.

By choosing sustainable precast concrete options, architects can reduce on-site waste, cut down embodied and operational carbon levels, and support faster, safer construction programmes.

Importantly, these solutions still provide the design flexibility and technical performance needed in modern commercial and residential developments.

WHAT MAKES PRECAST CONCRETE PANELS SUSTAINABLE?

Precast concrete panels are inherently more sustainable than many traditional construction methods because they are manufactured in controlled factory environments. This allows for precise material usage and significantly reduces waste.

The panels are produced using optimised mix designs that lower embodied carbon and use materials more efficiently. Since panels are delivered to site ready to install, there is less on-site activity, which means fewer vehicle movements, reduced energy consumption, and lower emissions.

Their long lifespan and durability also contribute to sustainability by minimising the need for repairs or replacement over the building’s life.

Additionally, the panels can improve a building’s thermal performance, supporting greater energy efficiency once the building is in use.

FP MCCANN’S APPROACH TO SUSTAINABLE PRECAST CONCRETE PANELS

At FP McCann, we are leading the way in our precast concrete manufacturing as a sustainable building product.

We have 14 state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities strategically located across the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland which means we can efficiently serve the construction industry with precast concrete.

Our latest £30m state-of-the art concrete roof tile manufacturing facility built in Cadeby, Leicestershire, uses solar panels to provide 100% of the plant’s energy requirement.

The production of precast concrete in a controlled facility results in greater efficiency and less environmental waste.

FP McCann are one of the UK and Ireland’s leading precast concrete manufacturers, and have built our 45 year reputation on a foundation of excellence, innovation, and reliability.

Our low carbon precast concrete is the result of continuous innovation in material selection, manufacturing processes, and supply chain management.

By integrating cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices, we provide construction professionals with high-quality precast solutions that contribute to a lower carbon footprint while maintaining the strength and reliability expected of precast concrete.

PRESTRESSED HORIZONTAL PANELS – A PRACTICAL AND SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT

Prestressed horizontal panels from FP McCann are manufactured using high-strength C45/55 concrete and prestressing wires, giving each panel in-built strength and long-term resilience. This allows the panels to absorb minor accidental damage and perform efficiently using less material, supporting sustainable design goals.

The tongue and groove joints enable easy alignment and positive sealing, which speeds up installation and reduces the need for additional site work.

Compared with blockwork, prestressed panels are more versatile and more cost-effective, while also removing the need for foundations in many applications.

Panels are produced in bespoke lengths and a range of widths, providing architects with flexibility during the design phase.

In addition to improving efficiency and reducing site waste, the simplified and rapid installation process also helps to lower emissions by shortening site programmes and reducing vehicle movements.

THE ROLE OF PRECAST CONCRETE IN NET ZERO CONSTRUCTION

The UK construction industry is undergoing a major transformation as it works towards net zero carbon targets.

Part Z of the UK Building Regulations, although not yet an official part of the UK Building Regulations, proposed mandatory embodied carbon limits for buildings. It was first introduced to parliament in February 2022, as part of the Carbon Emissions (Buildings) Bill, however hasn’t yet received full government support.

In the meantime, The Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (NZCBS) was developed with input from over 300 industry experts – including IStructE, the Carbon Trust, BRE, RIBA and UKGBC. It provides a unified framework for demonstrating that a building is aligned with the UK’s Net Zero laws, ensuring clarity for specifiers when designing and building with materials.

With government regulations, client expectations, and sustainability commitments driving the shift towards low-carbon construction, the role of precast concrete is evolving rapidly.

As one of the most durable, efficient, and adaptable building materials, precast concrete is positioned to play a crucial role in reducing the carbon footprint of buildings and infrastructure projects.

At FP McCann, we are committed to leading the way in net zero precast solutions, integrating new technologies and sustainable practices to future-proof the industry.
