– In hot weather, consider early morning pours and curing measures

Preparation:

– Ensure sub-base is properly compacted

– Install damp-proof membrane where required

– Secure formwork to prevent movement

– Install reinforcement as specified

– Have adequate labour and equipment ready

Pouring Technique:

– Pour concrete as close to the final position as possible

– Spread evenly to avoid segregation

– Compact thoroughly to eliminate air voids

– Work systematically from one end to the other

– Finish the surface to the required specification.

Curing:

– Protect concrete from rapid drying

– Keep surface moist for at least 7 days in warm weather

– Use curing membranes or coverings as appropriate

– Protect from traffic and loading until adequate strength is achieved

For detailed technical guidance, visit our Technical Guidance Page or contact our technical team for project-specific advice.

Calculating Concrete Quantities

Accurate quantity calculation is essential to avoid over-ordering or under-ordering concrete. Use our online calculator or follow these guidelines:

Basic Calculation: Volume (m³) = Length (m) × Width (m) × Depth (m)

Example: Driveway 10m long × 3m wide × 0.15m deep = 4.5m³

Important Considerations:

– Always add 5-10% wastage allowance

– Account for irregular shapes

– Consider sub-base settlement

– Check formwork dimensions are accurate

For complex shapes or if you’re unsure, use our free site measurement service.

Reinforcement Requirements

Many concrete applications require reinforcement for crack control and structural strength:

Mesh Reinforcement:

– A142 mesh (6mm bars at 200mm centres): Light-duty slabs, domestic floors

– A193 mesh (7mm bars at 200mm centres): Driveways, garage floors

– A252 mesh (8mm bars at 200mm centres): Heavy-duty applications

Bar Reinforcement:

– Used in foundations, structural elements, and heavy-duty applications

– Sized and positioned according to structural engineering specifications

Our team can advise on appropriate reinforcement for your application, though structural design should be confirmed by a qualified engineer for structural applications.
