How to Use FP McCann Rapid Set Bedding Mortar

Application Guidance

  • When using this product, good site practice should always apply. FP McCann cannot be held responsible where workmanship has failed to meet relevant European and British Standards.
  • Cement based products will take longer to harden and set at lower temperatures, and should not be used below 5ºC. Do not use in ground where frost is present.
  • When site temperatures are below 10ºC consider allowing extra time before opening to traffic, applying further loads etc
  • Exposure to drying winds and or strong sunlight may result in rapid drying and cracking.
  • All surfaces must be clean and free from all contamination. For best results, surfaces should be mechanically roughened.
  • All surfaces should be saturated with clean water but free from standing water.
  • Care must be taken to prevent voids in the bedding material under the frame. Exposed surfaces of the bedding material should be float finished, ensuring voids are filled.

Mixing & Water Guidance

  • FP McCann Rapid Set Bedding Mortar should be mixed using the correct amount of water by using a mechanical mixing method such as a slow speed drill and paddle.
  • A 20kg bag of should be added carefully to between 2 and 3 litres of water depending on required workability.
  • Mix product for a minimum of 3 minutes until a homogeneous consistency is achieved.
  • Mixed material should be used within 5-10min of mixing. Mixed product will begin to set within 10-15min.
  • Adding additional water or trying to revive a mix that has begun to go off will greatly reduce performance.

Application

  • Immediately after mixing, apply the bedding material over the pre-soaked substrate. This should be within 5min of mixing.
  • Place the access cover frame onto the bedding mortar ensuring it is fully bedded without voids. Gently tamp frame in to place to achieve the required level.
  • It is recommended to envelope the flanges of the frame by a minimum thickness of 10mm of the bedding material.
  • Exposed surfaces of the bedding material should be float finished and pointed to a smooth finish, ensuring any voids are filled.
  • Once the bedding material has reached its initial set, backfilling can be completed with FP McCann Rapid Set Backfill Concrete.
