How to Use FP McCann Rapid Set Backfill Concrete

Application Guidance

  • When using this product, good site practice should always apply. FP McCann cannot be held responsible where workmanship has failed to meet the relevant European and British Standards.
  • Cement based products will take longer to harden and set at lower temperatures, and should not be used below 5°C. Do not use in ground where frost is present.
  • When site temperatures are below 10°C consider allowing extra time before opening to traffic, applying further loads etc.
  • Exposure to drying winds and/or strong sunlight may result in rapid drying and cracking.
  • All surfaces must be clean and free from all contamination. For best results, surfaces should be mechanically roughened.
  • All surfaces should be saturated with clean water but free from standing water.

Mixing & Water Guidance

  • FP McCann Rapid Set Backfill Concrete should be mixed using the correct amount of water by using a mechanical mixing method such as a slow speed drill and paddle.
  • A 20kg bag of should be added carefully to between 2 and 3 litres of water depending on required workability. Typically, the addition of 2.5L of water per bag results in a slow flowing concrete.
  • Mix product for a minimum of 3 minutes until a homogeneous consistency is achieved.
  • Mixed material should be used within 5-10min of mixing. Mixed product will begin to set within 10-15min.
  • Adding additional water or trying to revive a mix that has begun to go off will greatly reduce performance.

Application

  • Immediately after mixing, trowel or pour the concrete into place over pre soaked substrate.  This should be within 5min of mixing
  • Gently tamp the concrete with a trowel or similar to ensure compaction.
  • Exposed surfaces should be float finished, ensuring any voids are filled.
  • When backfilling prior to resurfacing, it is generally recommended to finish the backfill not more than 40mm below the finished level and that a suitable tack coat is applied prior to the application of the surfacing material or FP McCann Easi Repair Permanent Cold Lay Surfacing Material.
