How to Use FP McCann Paving Bedding Mortar
Application Guidance
- When using this product, good site practice should always apply. FP McCann cannot be held responsible where workmanship has failed to meet the relevant European and British Standards.
- Cement based products will take longer to harden and set at lower temperatures, and should not be used below 5°C. Do not use in ground where frost is present or expected overnight.
- When site temperatures are below 10°C extra time should be allowed for cleaning.
- Prior to use all surfaces must be sound, clean and free from any loose material or any other contamination including oils, grease and curing membranes.
- The base must be stable and of sufficient structural strength for the application and traffic.
- The base should be pre-soaked but free from standing water and, to further improve bond, should be primed using FP McCann Priming Slurry. Priming of the base is not a requirement of BS7533 but is recommended. Paving Mortar should be laid wet on wet to the freshly applied Priming Slurry.
- The Paving Mortar should be applied in thicknesses of 10mm-100mm in a single pass. Thicker sections can be achieved by laying subsequent passes.
- Priming of the underside of the paving units is essential to ensure sufficient bond is achieved.
- Priming Slurry should be applied to the underside of paving units immediately prior to their placement upon the Paving Mortar bed and tapping level.
- Allow a minimum of 12 hours before light foot traffic and 1-2 days before vehicular traffic, depending on site conditions.
Mixing & Water Guidance
- FP McCann Paving Mortar should be mixed using the correct amount of water by using a mechanical mixing method such as using a suitable slow speed high torque drill and mixing paddle.
- Mix to a consistency suitable for the intended application. Typically, a 20kg bag should be mixed with 1.6 – 2.0 L of water.
- Mix product for a minimum of 3 minutes until a homogeneous consistency is achieved. Mixing too wet or too dry will impair performance.
- Workability should be checked regularly using a snowball test.
- Mixed material should be used within 60min of mixing.
- Adding additional water or trying to revive a mix that has begun to go off will greatly reduce performance.
