A £17.5 million 3,000 seat ice arena has been completed in Cardiff with FP McCann playing a major part in the construction by supplying the precast concrete terracing units onto which the spectator seating will be located.

The centre named “Ice Arena Wales” is part of the £400 million Cardiff Bay International Sports Village and has become the new home of the Cardiff Devils ice hockey team. The contract to build the two-rink facility was awarded to Kier Construction early in 2014 by developer Greenbank Partnerships. FP McCann successfully tendered for the precast concrete special terracing units and steps and has worked closely with the Kier team throughout the 70-week build programme to ensure all product specifications and delivery requirements have been met. In total, FP McCann has supplied some 575 individual precast concrete units amounting to 335 cubic metres, comprising mainly straight and curved terrace pieces and double step blocks. Additional items include vomitory and tunnel walls. All products have been manufactured at the Company’s specialist facility at Grantham, Lincolnshire.

Sue Verrill, FP McCann’s specialist products commercial manager has been the Company’s focal point for the scheme, liaising with Kier’s senior engineer on the project, Jens Parry. Commenting on the project Sue says, “It has been very rewarding to be involved in such a prestigious scheme and as the project takes shape the contribution that FP McCann’s products have made can be clearly seen around the arena.”

Ice Arena Wales will be a world-class facility capable of holding Olympic and European standard events and to complete the sports village, an indoor ski slope and shopping centre will be built along with a luxury hotel, flats and offices.
