LEAN TOUR AT FP MCCANN’S ELLISTOWN DEPOT

FP McCann’s Ellistown Lean Tour Puts People at the Heart of Continuous Improvement

FP McCann has hosted its latest Lean Tour at the company’s Ellistown manufacturing facility, bringing colleagues together to share best practice and demonstrate how continuous improvement is being driven across the business.

The Ellistown team provided attendees with a first-hand look at the progress being made across the facility and, importantly, the processes and culture behind that progress.

Building on the success of previous Lean Tours across FP McCann’s manufacturing network, the visit demonstrated how Lean principles are increasingly becoming part of everyday working practices – encouraging employees at every level of the business to question existing processes, identify opportunities for improvement and develop practical solutions.

Creative thinking from the factory floor

A key theme throughout the Ellistown tour was the importance of employee involvement.

Rather than improvement being driven solely from the management level, the team demonstrated that employees closest to the manufacturing process are being encouraged to identify everyday issues that affect their work and think creatively about how to resolve them.

This practical approach – addressing the things that can cause frustration, unnecessary work, delays or inefficiency – is helping to create an environment where continuous improvement becomes everyone’s responsibility.

The tour also highlighted the strong level of engagement across the Ellistown operation, from colleagues working directly on the factory floor through to the site’s management team.

Safer, smarter manufacturing

Health and safety remains central to the continuous improvement programme at Ellistown, with the team demonstrating how changes to processes and working practices can help create a safer and more efficient manufacturing environment.

Alongside this, increasing use of IT and digital technology within manufacturing processes was another important focus.

The integration of digital systems is helping teams improve access to information, strengthen process control and identify opportunities to remove unnecessary manual activities. This combination of Lean thinking and technology provides further opportunities to improve efficiency while giving employees better information to support day-to-day decision-making.

Quality built into the process

Product quality remains a fundamental part of FP McCann’s Lean programme.

The Ellistown team demonstrated how continuous improvement can be used not only to increase productivity but also to make manufacturing processes more consistent and controlled – helping identify potential issues earlier and maintain the high standards expected across FP McCann’s precast concrete operations.

Bringing safety, quality, technology and efficiency together under a continuous improvement approach ensures that Lean is about much more than simply reducing waste.

Sharing ideas across the business

FP McCann’s Lean Tours provide teams from across the company with an opportunity to see operational improvements, exchange ideas, and bring successful approaches back to their own facilities.

The Ellistown tour demonstrated the value of this collaborative approach and, in particular, the importance of giving employees the opportunity and support to challenge the way things have traditionally been done.

With strong engagement from the factory floor through to senior management, Ellistown is demonstrating how relatively simple ideas, combined with creative thinking and a willingness to continually improve, can make a meaningful difference.

By empowering the people who understand our manufacturing processes best to identify problems and develop solutions, FP McCann continues to build a culture where safer working, better quality and smarter manufacturing go hand in hand.
