FP McCann has supplied shotcrete concrete to Specialist Concrete Solutions for a new skateboard park in Larne. Shotcrete was used to form the contours of the ramps at the newly constructed Larne Urban Sports Park.
Shotcrete is a form of concrete that is sprayed on to a surface, removing the need for moulds. It is reinforced with steel mesh/fibres or steel rods and effectively applies concrete to curves or irregular shapes.
Specialist Concrete Solutions provides shotcrete and sprayed concrete services for a range of applications throughout the UK and Ireland. In Ireland alone, they have completed 12 similar projects for local councils.
Sean McKaigue, Director at Specialist Concrete Solutions, said: “We carry out various projects from embankment stabilisation to bridge strengthening and repairs, industrial flooring and freeform structures such architectural features and skateparks. The skatepark requires concrete to be applied to a lot of varying curves and irregular shapes to create the ramps. Shotcrete is the best way to achieve this, and we were very pleased with the mix supplied by FP McCann and the level of service we received.”
This project was carried out for Mid & East Antrim Borough Council, and the investment in the skatepark came from the council’s Out to Play strategy.
Around 50m³ of concrete was supplied over four weeks. The project was completed in August and opened in September 2024.
For this project, the civil engineering company Civco was the main contractor.
