FP McCann Supplies 4000m³ of Ready Mix Concrete to Ballykeel Windfarm

Status: Ongoing

Location: Starbog Road, Larne

Division: Ready Mix Concrete, Stone, Drainage

Main Contractor: William & Henry Alexander Ltd

Market Sector: Renewable Energy

FP McCann’s Loughside Quarry in Larne has supplied a large volume of Ready Mix Concrete to William & Henry Alexander (Civil Engineering) Ltd. for the turbine base foundations of a new onshore windfarm in Larne, County Antrim.

The concrete mix used incorporated 50% GGBS to replace cement. This reduces the heat of hydration of the concrete and reduces likelihood of issues such as cracking considering the volume of concrete placed. This also helps reduce carbon the footprint of the concrete.

Ballykeel Windfarm was acquired by Danish renewable energy company Ørsted and once operational will have a total capacity of 16 MW.

Johnny Smyth, Alexander Civil Engineering, said: “FP McCann were the RMC supplier on this project, which required a large volume of concrete to be delivered and poured in a timely manner. We were very pleased with the quality of the ready mix supplied; the mix used was consistent across the seven bases despite being poured on several different days to tie in with the timeframe of other work taking place on the site. We would definitely recommend FP McCann’s product and level of service.”

Over 4000m3 of concrete was used in the project. 7 turbine bases were poured one day a week over a seven week period, with each foundation completed in a six-hour pour period.

FP McCann used 13 lorries from our Mallusk and Loughside depots to deliver the concrete to site. The project is due for completion in 2023.
