FP McCann Supplies and Installs Structural Lift Shaft and Stair Cores on Manchester Hospital
Project: Ancoats Mobility Hub, Ancoats Green, Manchester.
Client: Manchester City Council/Manchester Life
Main Contractor: Bowmer + Kirkland
Lift Shaft & Stair Flight Install: FP McCann
Products Supplied: Precast Concrete Lift Shaft & Stair Cores

FP McCann has completed the installation of two 9 storey precast concrete structural stair and lift shaft cores as part of a major residential regeneration scheme at Ancoats Green in north east Manchester. The Ancoats Mobility Hub, the first of its kind in the UK, will help the area to become the first ‘people first’ neighbourhood that prioritises streets for people over cars and provide sustainable travel.
The two structural precast concrete lift shaft and stair cores (An east and west core) form the initial phase of the project and have been erected ahead the main building in panel sections manufactured off-site at FP McCann’s Byley factory in Cheshire. FP McCann’s installation team has completed the build of the two precast structures over a period of 58 days. Components and features in the panel section structures include dividing walls, door openings and cast in fixing channels. The lift and stair cores also comprise stair flights, landing slabs and lids.
Main contractor on the project Bowmer + Kirkland along with architects Buttress and structural engineers Kennedy Redford engaged and involved FP McCann at the early stages of design. FP McCann were able to demonstrate fast-track construction of the structural off-site manufactured precast concrete elements thereby allowing follow-on trades easier and safer access. Within the design criteria, the structural cores have a type B finish and a 120-minute fire rating to comply with MSCP standards. In total, 2340 tonnes of precast concrete panel sections have been supplied and installed by FP McCann.
The Mobility Hub is a brand-new concept in urban Multi-Storey Car Park (MSCP) design, developed in partnership between Manchester City Council and Manchester Life. Green space investment is prioritised alongside sustainable and active travel, over space for on-street car parking and vehicles. Set for completion later in 2024, the next generation multi-storey car park will have space for 406 cars, 150 bicycles, a parcel delivery hub, café and commercial space. The Hub equipped with EV charging will also provide residents access to car share clubs and cycle hire schemes.
Commenting on FP McCann’s role in the project, David Baker Project Manager for Bowmer + Kirkland says, “The combined precast concrete panel section lift shaft and stair cores were installed extremely efficiently and in a timely manner by the FP McCann fixing team, demonstrating the major benefits in utilising off-site precast structural systems. Additionally, the finish achieved by such quality controlled off-site manufactured products minimises the work required from follow-on trades.”
