FP McCann Sets Benchmark in Ethical Natural Stone Sourcing with Comprehensive Human Rights Impact Assessment

FP McCann, a market leader in precast concrete and natural stone products, has taken a significant step forward in ethical sourcing and supply chain transparency by commissioning an independent Human Rights Impact Assessment (HRIA) of its sandstone supply chain from Rajasthan, India.

Conducted in early 2025 by a team of human rights experts that include Mr Stirling Smith and Mrs Indira Saxena, the HRIA thoroughly evaluated FP McCann’s natural stone suppliers, specifically Stone Shippers India, examining every level of the sandstone supply chain from factory to quarry. This robust assessment, in line with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGP), demonstrates FP McCann’s commitment to responsible business practices beyond traditional audits.

Unlike standard social audits, FP McCann’s HRIA explored deeply embedded practices, engaging directly with workers, management, and external stakeholders. The assessment identified key human rights areas such as occupational health and safety, freedom of association, child labour, forced labour, discrimination, living wages, and worker welfare, providing an authentic insight into on-ground realities.

The findings highlighted FP McCann’s supplier, Stone Shippers India, setting exemplary standards in Tier 1 operations, exceeding legal compliance with transparent and fair labour practices. However, the report candidly identified challenges within lower-tier suppliers, including risks associated with silicosis, wages, social security, and working conditions in smaller quarries and processing yards.

FP McCann is actively collaborating with suppliers to enhance standards across the supply chain, promote formalisation and regulatory compliance, and support worker enrolment in government welfare schemes. The company recognizes its influential role in encouraging industry-wide improvements and setting a new benchmark for ethical sourcing in the natural stone sector.

This HRIA represents FP McCann’s strategic move towards full transparency, strengthening trust among customers and stakeholders. It aligns with international standards, anticipates evolving global regulations, and significantly contributes to sustainable and responsible business practices.

FP McCann’s initiative underscores a transformative approach to ethical sourcing, making it a standout example in the construction and landscaping industries. FP McCann leads by example by sharing their experiences and learnings from this rigorous process, paving the way for other companies to prioritise human rights throughout their supply chains.
