FP McCann provides the total solution to precast concrete platform extension at Littlehaven Station
Project: Littlehaven Railway Station. Platform 2 Extension
Client: Network Rail / Department of Transport
Main Contractor: CK Rail
Products Supplied: Precast Concrete Cross beams and Rear beam units; Solid Plank Precast Concrete Platform Slabs; Acid-Etched Standard Platform Copers.

FP McCann has played a major part in the £22 million Network Rail refurbishment and improvement programme of works on the Arun Valley Line also known as the Mid-Sussex Line.
Track and signalling improvements, earthworks stabilisation and the refurbishment of stations and structures all formed part of the extensive programme, undertaken during a nine day line closure period in August.
FP McCann’s involvement was at Littlehaven station, where platform 2 has been extended to 12 cars in length which means that the longer trains will no longer overhang the adjacent road crossing increasing safety for rail passengers and road users at the crossing. Recognising the benefits gained by both rail and road user, the £1.9 million funding for this element of the project has come from the Department of Transport.
Work on Littlehaven platform 2 was awarded to Chesterfield based CK Rail. The construction services and rail civil engineering specialist approached FP McCann early in the design stage to determine the most efficient, cost effective and productive means to construct the platform extension in the programme’s short delivery window.
Having secured the precast concrete supply package, FP McCann delivered precast semi-modular cross beams and rear beam units integral the supporting structure in conjunction with block walls constructed by the CK Rail team. To complete the platform build, solid plank precast concrete slabs were installed along with FP McCann standard rail platform copers.
In total FP McCann supplied 13 cross beams, 12 rear beams, 22 solid precast concrete platform slabs and 68 standard acid-etched copers. All units were manufactured at the company’s Littleport factory in Cambridgshire.
CK Rail completed the platform extension in just seven days.
Speaking on behalf of CK Rail, Piling and Foundation Director Barry McMahon says, “The Littlehaven Platform 2 extension presented its own challenges, but by using a combination of traditional construction methods and semi-modular precast concrete units, we were able to complete the platform build in the limited rail possession time frame.”
