FP McCann has supplied and installed its modular precast concrete lift shafts, stair flights and landings to a brand-new education campus in Tain in the Scottish Highlands. The Craighill site once complete in late 2024, will amalgamate in the single location, the Tain Royal Academy, Craighill and Knockbreck Primary Schools and St Duthus School.
Kier Construction was appointed as the design and build contractor in 2022 working in conjunction with Highland Council’s in-house property teams to deliver the project. The building has been designed to meet the Passivhaus Standard which involves very high levels of insulation, an airtight building fabric, and a mechanical ventilation system with highly efficient heat recovery. The whole-life building approach focusses on high quality modern methods of construction with off-site manufactured products key in helping to achieve reduced energy usage and carbon emissions. The high-profile build is being overseen by Glasgow architect Stallan Brand.
The two-level development includes the construction of a structural steel frame. Working on behalf of Kier Construction, is steel fixing specialist BSB Structural. The Motherwell based company is undertaking the building’s steel framework, with the sub-contract FP McCann install team adding the precast concrete lift shafts and stair flights. Both two-storey lift shafts with a combined weight of 35 tonnes were installed ahead of the steel frame skeleton.
The single lift shaft pits were formed in situ along with the foundations on site by Kier Construction. The precast concrete lift shafts supplied from the Company’s Uddingston factory in south Lanarkshire, comprise 2 no. single door sections, 2 no. single travel sections and one capping slab. The overall external dimensions measure 8310mm high x 2400mm wide x 2150mm deep. Each lift door opening measures 1180mm x 2435mm. Components and features in the box section lift shafts include door openings, a smooth internal finish and cast in fixing channels.
FP McCann precast stair flights and stair landings totalling 74 tonnes also from Uddingston have been installed within the new steel frame. On completion and billed as the first project of its size to be ‘Passivehaus’ certified, the campus will maximise daylight, employ thermal mass heat capture and storage and natural stack ventilation. Speaking on behalf of BSB Structural, William Bell, Construction Director says, “The modular precast concrete lift shafts, stair flights and landings as specified as part of the design and build, were all supplied to the highest standard. The simple and speedy fixing of the off-site manufactured precast concrete products ensured that the work was undertaken in a very safe and efficient manner with installation completed to the programme schedule. Additionally, the finish achieved by such quality controlled off-site built products minimises the work required from follow-on trades.”
