FP MCCANN’S PRECAST CONCRETE ‘L’ WALL SYSTEM INSTALLED ON NEWBURY HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

FP McCann is supplying its steel reinforced precast concrete earth retaining ‘L’ Wall system on a brand-new housing site in Newbury, Berkshire. Developer Cala Homes, is building a range of exclusive 3,4 and 5 bedroom properties on their Coley Farm site.

With significant changes in elevation across the site, the project involves substantial earthworks. Solihull based civils and groundworks specialist MV Kelly is undertaking the main infrastructure works, which includes the installation of FP McCann’s earth retaining ‘L’ Walls.

Following a review of their in-situ wall options, the in-house engineering and construction team at MV Kelly opted for an off-site manufactured precast concrete ‘L’ Wall system, recognising this method of walling as being a simple, fast process. Additionally, the ‘L’ Walls eliminate the need for shuttering and steel foundation formwork. The units are simply set down on a concrete foundation slab: An additional benefit of the ‘L’ Wall system, is that no propping is required during construction.

FP McCann were approached by MV Kelly to provide a quotation for their 1.5m, 1.75m, 2.0m. 2.5m, 3.0m and 3.75m high wall units, following which an order was placed. The units are being delivered from FP McCann’s Lydney factory in Gloucestershire. Included in the order, are several special length units, 22.5° mitred units and 90° corner units. In total, some 280 individual ‘L’ Walls are being supplied.

Each separate run of walling acts as a soil retention barrier and once fixed into position on the concrete foundation slab, earth is backed up against the ‘L Walls’ as part of the raised ground levelling work for each individual building plot.

Commenting on the precast concrete ‘L’ Walls in place, the MV Kelly Site Manager says, “After quickly familiarising themselves with the anchoring and levelling method, our install team found the walls easy to set down. FP McCann’s ‘L’ Wall units are a simple, durable and cost-efficient means of creating an earth retaining wall, allowing us to work quickly and confidently with elevation changes on site.”

The precast concrete ‘L’ wall units are available in heights measuring 1.0 metre to 3.75 metres from FP McCann’s Lydney and Grantham depots and units from 4.0 metres to 6.0 metres high from Byley.
