Products Supplied: Precast Concrete Hollowcore Floors, Stair Flights and Landings

FP McCann’s Uddingston manufacturing facility has recently completed the supply package of precast concrete hollowcore flooring and stair flights and landings to the first Virgin Hotel in the UK.
Currently under construction within the famous India Buildings in Victoria Street, Edinburgh, the 5* hotel is due to open in Spring 2022. The project also includes the redevelopment of three existing Grade A listed buildings and new build pavilion all part of the UNESCO world heritage site. The scheme will deliver a new hotel providing 225 bedrooms with all associated restaurant, bar, meeting, conference and function facilities, including the Virgin brand’s flagship space, “Commons Club.”
The ten storey development includes the construction of a steel frame and precast concrete superstructure, with FP McCann’s hollowcore floor planks covering a total floor area of 6,184m2. Groundworks, building foundation, ground floor slab and construction up to the 3rd floor, has been undertaken by Careys, with specialist fit-out contractor Thomas Johnstone completing the high level build and finishing works on the landmark project. Working on behalf of both, is structural steel fabrication and installation specialist, BSB Structural. The Motherwell based company is undertaking the building’s steel framework, precast hollowcore flooring and stair flight installation.
The high profile build is being overseen by global property and construction consultancy Thomas and Adamson. Delivering the project is Glasgow based architect ICA alongside Edinburgh’s engineering design consultant Will Rudd Davidson who are responsible for the structural engineering to achieve the design intention of all the buildings in the proposed hotel development.
The hollowcore flooring system comprises 200mm, 250mm and 260mm deep prestressed steel reinforced concrete planks, all delivered from Uddingston. Each floor has been linked with FP McCann precast concrete stair flights and landings totalling 161 tonnes. Both flooring, stair flights and stair landings have been installed by BSB Structural with the detailing of the new steel frame and precast concrete hollowcore floor planks fundamental in the complex BIM design and 3D analysis modelling undertaken in Tekla CSC.
Speaking on behalf of BSB Structural, William Bell, Construction Director, says, “The prestressed steel reinforced precast hollowcore planks, stair flights and landings as specified as part of the design and build, were all supplied to the highest standard on a just-in-time delivery schedule. The simple and speedy fixing of all precast concrete products ensured that the work was undertaken in a very safe and efficient manner with installation completed to programme.”
The project will transform the India Buildings on Victoria Street and create a modern building to enhance the streetscape of Cowgate in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town near the Royal Mile.
