FP McCann has supplied pre-stressed precast concrete hollowcore flooring, stair flights and landings to a new multi-storey car park (MSCP), part of the largest single ‘out-of-town’ office development ever undertaken in West Yorkshire. The five level MSCP operates as the ‘active travel hub’ at Thorpe Park on the outskirts of Leeds. Thorpe Park is already an established business destination, with more than 900,000 sq. ft of office space, a hotel, retail and leisure amenities. Once complete, the site will be the largest mixed-use development in the North of England.

The £9.2 million contract to build the MSCP was awarded to building and construction services company GMI by land developer Scarborough Group International. Designed by architects Carey Jones Chapman Tolcher (CJCT), the 125,495 sq. ft, 442-space active travel hub acts as a central gateway for existing and future buildings. In a departure from the traditional business park format, it is designed to replicate the typical grid formation seen in city centres, consolidating car parking in a multi-storey structure to create more efficient building plots and allowing more space to create public realm and green spaces. Of the 442 car park spaces, 10% will support electric vehicle (EV) charging.

The five-level car park construction is of a steel frame and precast concrete superstructure. Some 800 tonnes of steel combined with 1,460 FP McCann precast concrete hollowcore flooring planks covering an above ground total area of 9,824m2, forms the main structure. The hollowcore planks are 150mm deep topped with a 75mm layer of a structural screed. Working on behalf of GMI, steel fixing specialist Billington Structures installed the frame and precast hollowcore flooring. The hollowcore planks were delivered from FP McCann’s Uddingston manufacturing plant in South Lanarkshire.

The build also included 16 FP McCann stair flights and 5 stair landings along with precast concrete drainage, consisting of precast concrete wide wall manhole rings (1200mm/1500mm dia) and seating slabs (600mmx600mm opening).

Ground and structural engineering specialist Buro Happold was engaged in the project to provide the civil and structural engineering consultancy service.

Speaking on behalf of GMI, Senior Site Manager Dominic Dickinson says, “The pre-stressed precast concrete hollowcore planks, stair flights and stair landings specified as part of the design and build, were all supplied to the highest standard on a just-in-time delivery schedule. Our sub-contract steel and precast fixing team undertook the work in a safe and efficient manner completing the installation to programme.”
