FP McCann’s Toomebridge Depot designed and manufactured a new 120 year design life bridge replacing the original steel Thorndell Viaduct within the flood plain situated between Pullborough and Amberley rail stations operated by Network Rail Southern Area, was handed over to client by main contractor Bam Nuttall in October 2015.
The 55m long bridge was constructed, largely of precast components designed in conjunction with our engineers and manufactured in Northern Ireland and shipped by sea and road to site in West Sussex.
Consisting of 22nr. bridge deck units, 48nr. Bridge parapet units, and 8nr.retaining walls, the entire structure, including track beds, sleepers and rails, was built alongside the existing railway line and then moved into place on crawler units during a single weekend possession over August 29-September 1, 2015.
In order to ensure perfect fit and tolerance of all precast components, the entire structure was temporarily erected for the first time in Northern Ireland at our Toomebridge Depot.
Total weight of the precast was 570 tons. The duration of the scheme was from February to October and BAM Nuttall were proud to have been able to hand over the works 4 hours ahead of schedule within the 75 hour total possession.
