FP McCann has been appointed as the Main Contractor for the delivery of the MSL Isolation Switch Facility Provision project on behalf of Translink.

Title: MSL Isolation Switch Facility Provision project

Location: Along the Derry/Londonderry to Belfast rail line

Client: Translink

Description: This project is part of the overall Translink strategy to improve performance of its Signalling and Telecommunication (S&T) assets, in this case ‘Miniature Stop Lights’ (MSL’s) provided and located on private User Worked Crossings (UWCs) located on the Derry/Londonderry to Belfast rail line section of the NIR network.

MSLs are generally provided at private User Worked Crossings (UWC) where the frequency of use is high and viewing distances are substandard.  The MSL’s work automatically on the detection of an approach train.  On activation the MSL displays a red stop light which is supported by an audible ‘yodel alarm’ which warns the user of an approaching train.  One drawback of this type of crossing is that during nightly possession periods when ontrack works are taking place in the vicinity of these crossings, the MSLs would remain at red with audible warnings sounding for potentially long periods.

This project aims to provide an ‘Isolation’ switch for the MSL units and audible alarms while maintaining safe operation of these crossings during engineering possession periods.  To facilitate this, and while the Londonderry railway line remains fully open and operational at all times throughout the construction phase, the following works are to be delivered;

  • new or extensions to existing hardstandings at each of the identified locations are to be constructed,
  • fencing and handrails are to be renewed or installed,
  • precast concrete foundation bases for new Location Cases (LOC’s)and operator’s equipment are to be installed,
  • Location Cases (LOC’s)and operator’s equipment are to be installed each of the identified locations,
  • Cable management in the form of ducting and chambers etc., is to be installed linking the new equipment to the existing line side cable infrastructure.

We particularly welcome interest from local sub-contractors and suppliers.
