FP McCann Hosts Toomebridge Birthday Event for Local Schools
FP McCann hosted an event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Toome Bypass Road bridge over the River Bann at Toomebridge, and the 225th Birthday of William Dargan.
Key stage 2 students (primary 5, 6 and 7) were invited from the three local primary schools to the event; St Oliver Plunkett Primary School, Moneynick Primary School and Duneane Primary school. Approx. 112 students in total.
Workshop one was the construction of the ‘Big Bridge’ a 15m long, 3m high cable stay bridge. The students got to construct the deck using teamwork and scaffold support, before connecting the cables. The bridge was then tested, with each pupil and some teachers crossing the bridge. The ‘Big Bridge’ helps with STEM education in Northern Ireland by providing hands-on, real world experiences that captivate students’ imaginations.
The workshop 2 included how the Toome Bypass bridge was built, how bridges were built historically, and finally a talk on green energy using wind turbines as an example.
The event was a collaboration between FP McCann Ltd and WSP with the aim to encourage a new generation of engineers and construction workers, by inspiring the next generation into STEM projects whilst promoting diversity and inclusion.
