FP McCann has recently completed the supply and install of two 4 level Precast Concrete Lift Shafts on a brand new health and care centre at Parkhead in the east end of Glasgow. The £72 million medical facility currently under construction, is scheduled for completion mid 2024. The specialist development will be the largest of its kind in Scotland and without the reliance on fossil fuels will become the first net zero carbon health and care facility in operation.

BAM Constrict UK were awarded the main contract for building the centre by client Hub West Scotland and partner NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. The project design is led by Hoskins Architects supported by consulting engineer Aecom.

The first phase of the development includes the installation of a single and twin precast concrete lift shaft. Both lift shafts have been constructed by FP McCann’s specialist install team over a period of 5 days. The modular precast concrete build demonstrates the flexibility and practicality of utilising off-site manufactured products. FP McCann’s engineers were involved in the early stages of the design and were able to highlight to the client and main contractor the fast track construction capabilities using such a modular precast concrete system.

The single and twin lift pits were formed in situ along with the foundations on site by the groundworks team. The twin precast concrete lift shaft comprises 4no. double door sections, 5 no. double travel sections and one capping slab. The completed lift shaft is 15.925 metres high with external dimensions 4950mm wide x 3050mm deep. The heaviest precast concrete section weighs 13.44 tonnes. The single life shaft with single door openings measures the same height with external dimensions 3400mm wide x 2750mm deep. Components and features in the Box Section Lift Shafts include pre-formed door openings, a smooth internal finish and cast in fixing channels.

Commenting on FP McCann’s role in the project, Senior Site Manager for BAM Construct UK, Michael Hannan says, “Utilising off-site manufactured precast products such as the single and twin lift shafts has major benefits in terms of productivity and site safety. Additionally, the finish achieved by such quality controlled off-site built products minimises the work required from follow-on trades. To build such a structure using steel formwork and pouring of wet concrete would take days allowing for curing between each level.”
