FP McCann Completes Works at Whitehead Embankment Remediation

NIR Whitehead Embankment Remediation – Project Success Through Collaboration and Innovation

Translink/NIR (client) brought to FP McCann a request for a permanent solution for an embankment slippage within Whitehead cutting. FP McCann appointed Design ID as lead designer for this project to develop both scope and ultimate design.

Early Contractor and Designer involvement allowed design development to be streamlined by working closely with Translink’s Project and Structures teams which greatly reduced the typical turn around time of such a project. A number of different solutions were considered and examined for feasibility following site investigations carried out by Causeway Geotech on behalf of and in conjunction with FP McCann. A Redi-Rock gravity retaining wall (supplied by Moore Concrete) was agreed as the preferred solution for construction for a number of factors including available track closures, modular construction nature of the Redi-Rock system, completed aesthetics, and the option to extend the solution further through the cutting at a future date if required.

Faced with tight schedules and complex site constraints, this project was a true multidisciplinary effort, bringing together a range of subcontractors and suppliers united by a shared goal. With FP McCann’s characteristic innovative programming, strategic work design, and effective coordination, the team delivered outstanding results.

In addition to the Road Rail Excavators (RRV’s) provided by Railway Plant Services (RPS), the use of specialist equipment—including remote-controlled compaction tools and Menzi Muck walking excavator/s (provided and operated by SG Elite), experienced/competent Railway Safety Critical operatives provided by a Greentown, Professional Rail Solutions (PRS), and On Track technicians (OTT) to supplement FP McCanns direct experienced/competent Railway Safety Critical operatives — combined with the dedication and hard work of the entire project team, enabled successful delivery and early project completion. Most notably, the project was delivered with zero accidents or incidents.

A huge thank you to all who contributed to this success!

FP McCann has donated £300 to the Whitehead Community Association to help support the annual easter run, which is Northern Irelands longest standing road race! The event is a longstanding tradition and we hope our contribution will benefit the logistics of the event and help preserve a valuble piece of Whitehead’s history.
