FP McCann appointed to deliver the Strabane North Greenway project.

Description: Plans to deliver the Strabane North Greenway project moved a step closer today with the appointment of FP McCann to deliver the project, which is funded by the INTERREG VA programme, administered by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), and Derry City and Strabane District Council.

FP McCann Ltd have been tasked with delivering the scheme which will see approximately 1.4km of new greenway delivered along the former Great Northern Railway line. This link will provide enhanced off-road connectivity for non-motorised users between Strabane and Ballymagorry in County Tyrone.

McAdam Design will act as Project Manager through the delivery phase. Works are on schedule to commence in September and will involve, for example, the removal of site vegetation and the construction of a 3m wide cycle path with ducting and drainage.

Welcoming the news of the appointment, Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Mayor, Sandra Duffy, said: “It is great news that Council has successfully appointed a contractor to deliver this project, which will provide enhanced off-road connectivity between Strabane and Ballymagorry.  Increasing opportunities for active travel forms a key part of our Inclusive Strategic Growth and Green Infrastructure Plans”.

This exciting project will see the creation of a 46.5km greenway which will enhance accessibility between schools, businesses, parks and residential areas, and make cycling and walking more attractive commuting options for everyone.”

• The Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) is a North/South Implementation Body sponsored by The Department of Finance in Northern Ireland and the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform in Ireland. It is responsible for managing two European Union Structural Funds Programmes, PEACE IV and INTERREG VA which are designed to enhance cross-border cooperation, promote reconciliation, and create a more peaceful and prosperous society.
