In early November 2022, FP McCann successfully completed the XL 122 to 126 User Worked Crossing Closure Project on behalf of NI Railways. The project involved the construction of a new single span pre-stressed concrete integral overbridge over the railway West of Ballymoney including construction of approach embankments on each side and the construction of two new Earth Retaining Wall structures.

As part of the retaining wall structure construction, 450mm diameter CFA piles were installed on which 2 reinforced concrete pile caps were formed. 4 reinforced concrete bridge support columns were then installed prior to the construction of the 2 number ‘Macwall -Vertica’ earth retaining structures. The wall was a combination of Macwall-Vertica 4 degree concrete facing blocks, geogrid reinforcement and FP McCann class 6l granular fill. Throughout these works the railway remained fully operational.

The 15.2 m long precast concrete prestressed bridgebeams were installed at the start of July 2022 within an 8 hour railway line possession, along with a guardrail system so as the remainder of the bridge could be constructed during normal working hours and train movements. The remaining works including the bridge deck, waterproofing and installation of the bridge parapet system.

The other works either side of the bridge structure included construction of 475 linear meters of reinforced concrete laneway, installation of 550m of Vehicle restraint system, installation of new agricultural fencing, and installation of new storm drainage.

This project is part of NI Railways overall strategy to improve safety especially at User Worked Crossings throughout the NIR network, where possible (as in this instance) closing 5 crossings through provision of alternative access to lands and premises.
