RIVEN INDIAN SANDSTONE PAVING
Riven Indian Sandstone Paving is a hand-cut natural stone with a textured, split surface and warm tonal variation. It suits heritage schemes, garden pathways and communal outdoor areas where a traditional finish is required.
Each flag is calibrated to a uniform 18mm thickness, which exceeds the requirements of BS 7533-101, the code of practice for the design and installation of pavements.

LANDSCAPE PORCELAIN PAVING
Landscape Porcelain Paving is a 20mm porcelain tile with a smooth, flat surface that can be used internally and externally, making it a practical option for indoor to outdoor threshold details. The non-porous surface needs minimal maintenance and holds its appearance in high-footfall areas such as courtyards, terraces and outdoor seating areas.

ESSENTIAL PORCELAIN PAVING
Essential Porcelain Paving provides the same smooth, low-maintenance porcelain surface at 16mm thickness and a lower price point. It suits budget-led schemes such as housing developments and communal outdoor spaces where cost per square metre is a deciding factor. The 16mm tile is also lighter to handle than its 20mm equivalent and gives higher coverage per pack.

SANDSTONE OR PORCELAIN – CHOOSING THE RIGHT OUTDOOR TILE
The choice between natural sandstone and porcelain comes down to the priorities of the project.
Appearance. Sandstone gives natural tonal variation, with no two flags identical. Porcelain gives a consistent, uniform finish across the whole laid area. Riven sandstone reads as traditional, while sawn sandstone and porcelain both suit contemporary schemes.
Water absorption and staining. Porcelain is non-porous, resists staining and does not need sealing. Sandstone is porous, so sealing after installation protects against staining and organic growth such as moss and algae.
Maintenance. Porcelain needs little more than routine cleaning over its life. Sandstone needs periodic resealing, with the interval depending on traffic and exposure.
Surface grip. The riven sandstone has a naturally textured surface that provides grip in wet conditions. Sawn sandstone and porcelain have smoother surfaces, so falls and surface drainage matter more in exposed locations.
On-site handling. Porcelain is dense and non-porous, so it requires a priming slurry to bond with the mortar bed and diamond blade equipment for cutting. Sandstone cuts more readily, but as a natural material it varies from batch to batch, so flags should be drawn from several packs at once during laying to blend the tones.
Cost. Essential Porcelain and Riven Sandstone sit at the more economical end of the range, with Landscape Porcelain at the upper end.
As a general guide, Riven sandstone for heritage and traditional schemes, Sawn sandstone or porcelain for contemporary public sector work, and Essential Porcelain for volume housing and budget-led projects.
