LOW CARBON PRECAST CONCRETE
LOW CARBON PRECAST CONCRETE
Low carbon precast concrete is a popular building material among specifiers who are committed to reducing the environmental impact of construction projects.
As the industry moves towards net-zero carbon targets, the demand for sustainable building materials that balance strength, durability, and efficiency has never been greater.
Compared to other building materials, for example in-situ concrete, low carbon precast concrete incorporates innovative mix designs, alternative binders, and energy-efficient manufacturing processes to significantly cut embodied carbon while maintaining structural integrity.
At FP McCann, we are leading the way in low carbon precast innovation, offering high-performance, sustainable solutions that support the evolving needs of modern construction.
As a business, we are deeply committed to sustainability, integrating environmentally friendly processes and materials into the manufacturing of our concrete products. And it isn’t just our processes that are environmentally friendly, but the precast concrete products we manufacture contribute to a more sustainable future.
THE ROLE OF LOW CARBON PRECAST CONCRETE IN CONSTRUCTION
With buildings and infrastructure accounting for nearly 40% of global carbon emissions (source: World Economic Forum https://www.weforum.org/publications/scaling-low-carbon-design-and-construction-with-concrete-enabling-the-path-to-net-zero-for-buildings-and-infrastructure/) , architects, main contractors and sub-contractors are under increasing pressure to specify and use materials that reduce environmental impact without compromising on quality, durability, or cost-effectiveness.
Precast concrete has long been a preferred choice for structural and civil engineering applications due to its strength, versatility, and speed of installation. However, as sustainability gains momentum, the industry is shifting towards low carbon precast concrete as a viable solution for reducing embodied carbon in construction projects.
Low carbon precast concrete is specifically designed to lower the environmental footprint of construction by incorporating alternative binders, recycled materials, and innovative production techniques that significantly cut CO₂ emissions.
Traditional concrete production, particularly the use of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), is one of the largest contributors to industrial carbon emissions. By adopting low-carbon substitutes such as Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) and Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA) which both have cementitious properties, manufacturers can reduce the embodied carbon of precast concrete elements.
Additionally, advancements in energy efficient manufacturing technologies and processes further contribute to the sustainability credentials of low carbon precast concrete.
For construction professionals, the demand for low carbon materials is no longer just an environmental preference – it is becoming a contractual requirement to ensure project compliance.
Part Z of the UK Building Regulations, although not yet an official part of the UK Building Regulations, proposed mandatory embodied carbon limits for buildings. It was first introduced to parliament in February 2022, as part of the Carbon Emissions (Buildings) Bill, however hasn’t yet received full government support.
In the meantime, The Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (NZCBS) was developed with input from over 300 industry experts – including IStructE, the Carbon Trust, BRE, RIBA and UKGBC. It provides a unified framework for demonstrating that a building is aligned with the UK’s Net Zero laws, ensuring clarity for specifiers when designing and building with materials.
It means that specifying low carbon precast concrete can help architects and contractors ensure compliance, improve project sustainability ratings, and future-proof developments against stricter regulations.

SUSTAINABLE PRECAST CONCRETE SOLUTIONS FROM FP MCCANN
FP McCann has 14 state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities strategically located across the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland which means we can efficiently serve the construction industry with precast concrete.
FP McCann are one of the UK and Ireland’s leading precast concrete manufacturers, and have built our 45 year reputation on a foundation of excellence, innovation, and reliability.
Indeed, we have a new £30m state-of-the art concrete roof tile manufacturing facility built in Cadeby, Leicestershire which uses solar panels to provide 100% of the plant’s energy requirement.
The production of precast concrete in a controlled facility results in greater efficiency and less environmental waste.
