Public realm improvement works completed by FP McCann around the historic Derry City Walls.

FP McCann’s quarrying, paving, bedding and grouting, surfacing and precast concrete products all featured on the Inner Walled City Public Realm Scheme surrounding the historic Derry City Walls. Delivered by FP McCann’s Civil Engineering Division on behalf of the Department for Communities, the project demonstrated the breadth of materials and construction solutions available across the FP McCann Group, with products supplied from multiple divisions contributing to both the permanent and temporary works.

The scheme included new paved footpaths & roadways, kerbs and road surfacing, alongside improved pedestrian access and safety, bespoke street furniture, and upgrades to Society Street Car Park.

Asphalt from FP McCann’s regional quarries and depots was used to surface sections of the scheme. FP McCann also supplied quarry materials for the project groundworks and provided ready mix concrete as part of the works.

For the newly paved areas of the scheme, natural stone paving was supplied along with street screed delivered in our self-contained silos. Priming slurry and paving grout from FP McCann’s bagged product range was also supplied.

Precast gullies supplied from FP McCann’s Precast Concrete Manufacturing Facility in Knockloughrim formed part of the project’s drainage and water management infrastructure.

FP McCann’s Easi-Bloc™ precast concrete interlocking block units were used to set up the temporary works compound in order to facilitate the works, and FP McCann’s Pedestrian Safety Barriers were used at strategic locations on site to restrict traffic during construction, providing an effective containment solution where space was limited. Concrete blocks were also supplied to rebuild a section of walling that served as an emergency exit for a local business.

The project was delivered in close collaboration with DfI Roads, City Centre Initiative (CCI), NIEA Historic Environment Division (HED), local stakeholders, residents, businesses and visitors to the busy city centre area.

FP McCann served as main contractor for the scheme and appointed AECOM to complete the detailed design. Tetra Tech provided NEC project management services for the Client.

In a statement published by the Department for Communities, DfC Minister Gordon Lyons said: “This represents a significant milestone for Londonderry. This investment has transformed key streets and spaces within the walled city, creating a more attractive, accessible and vibrant environment for residents, businesses and visitors alike…”

Minister Lyons marked the official completion of the project on 25 August 2026.
