FP McCann Universal Shafts and VacuFlush used in Glasgow Infrastructure Project.
Project: Flood Alleviation Scheme – Elmvale Row, Glasgow, Scotland
Client: Scottish Water
Main Contractor: ASG Tunnelling
Products Supplied: 25m Universal Shaft fitted with VacuFlush Chambers

FP McCann has supplied universal shaft segment components for the construction of two 25m diameter storage tanks as part of the £250m Elmvale Row Flood Alleviation Scheme, for Scottish Water by main contractor Amey Black and Veatch.
The tanks, to a depth of 18m, will together provide an additional 13,500 cubic metres of stormwater storage in the local sewer network.
In a scheme which bears resemblance to the flood alleviation measures implemented in Preston, Lancashire by United Utilities – which utilised both shaft and tunnel segments supplied by our Toomebridge Depot. Glasgow’s drainage infrastructure is being expanded and modernised to deal with more frequent flood events, and to improve the quality of water which may be vented into the River Clyde.
The new shafts are also being fitted with VacuFlush chambers which, during periods of heavy rain, hold 5 meters of water within the column at a minimum -0.5 bar of vacuum.
Once the stormwater level within the main body of the tank has subsided, the water held under vacuum within the column is released thereby flushing out any debris and detritus remaining on the floor of the tank. This removes the need for operator access to the inside of the tank for emergency clean up.
