Precast Wallcast Installation: FP McCann

FP McCann is supplying and installing its latest precast concrete walling system “WallCast” at a new state-of-the-art public mortuary in Northampton. The integrated column and panel wall is forming a boundary to the external dignified space of the £9.5 million development. Client, West Northamptonshire Council is investing in the purpose-built modern facility which will deliver the highest standard of after-life care and support for families across Northamptonshire and the wider region.
Construction specialist Stepnell Ltd, is undertaking the build of the mortuary, due for completion in autumn 2025. After considering a number of boundary wall options, the Council, Stepnell and architect pHp opted for FP McCann’s WallCast solution.
The WallCast system consists of a unique and rigid column base footing that allows for quick and easy sectional wall installation. Panels are simply slotted into the ‘H’ intermediate, end and corner precast concrete posts. To enhance the design of the wall an attractive textured finish has been factory applied. The Reckli elastic texture formliner process enables exposed concrete panel faces to take on a unique architectural look. In the case of the mortuary boundary wall, the “Rhein Reckli” finish to the panels has been specified.
In total the FP McCann fixing team have installed 23 foundation pads and precast concrete columns and 19 decorative WallCast panels each 150mm thick. Individual columns measure 3.6m high x 0.4m x0.4m and the WallCast panels are 2.7m high with lengths ranging from 1.7m to 4.4m. The thickness of the wall itself is an additional benefit to this scheme, offering noise protection to the quiet, reflective space.
Once the columns have been set into the foundation slabs, the panels are simply slotted in. The columns and panels have all been delivered from the FP McCann Littleport factory in Cambridgeshire.
As well as boundary and perimeter walls, FP McCann’s WallCast is also utilised on residential and commercial projects where innovative and unique exterior wall designs enhance the finished architectural appearance.
Commenting on the WallCast installation process, Project Manager for Stepnell Peter Tombs says, “The FP McCann WallCast precast concrete system is an ideal solution for this boundary wall. The sympathetic architectural finish to the panels is particularly suited to this sensitive project. It is evident that the FP McCann fixing team are well versed in the installation process with the wall placement undertaken in a timely and efficient manner. It is a system we will consider using on future projects.”
