Site: Wooler, Northumberland
Client: Tarmac Ltd.
FP McCann has recently supplied its Easi-Bloc ‘Lego’ block unit and precast concrete cable ducts for a unique application at Tarmac’s Cheviot sand and gravel quarry in Wooler, Northumberland.
The washout water from the washing plant is being channelled down a run of 350x300x1000mm precast concrete ducts into a holding wedge pit which has been constructed using FP McCann’s 1200x600x450mm Easi-Bloc units. The pit measures approximately 10 metres long by 7 metres wide and is three blocks high (1.35 metres deep).
Normally supplied to utility projects for housing power and communication cables, the precast ducts are ideal as an open water channel and the blocks typically used for dry storage bays and small retaining walls, have proved they can perform as a low height water retention facility.
Commenting on the choice of products all supplied from FP McCann’s Alnwick precast factory, Gareth Williams, Cheviot Quarry Manager says, “In discussions with Graeme Convery, Production Supervisor at Alnwick, we jointly agreed that the precast cable duct/Easi-Bloc combination could provide a solution to channelling and holding the washout water from the plant. The scheme has been so successful that we are now looking at installing further precast channels to house water pipes from the plant that are currently buried and therefore difficult to access for maintenance purposes”.
