FP McCann Modular Precast Platform Units Utilised on Thames Valley EMU Platform Extensions Project

FP McCann’s modular precast platform unit has been used for this project in order to accommodate new longer EMU trains. FP McCann delivered 539 platform units to 24 platforms within 11 stations along the Great Western Main Line.

With FP McCann’s previous extensive experience in this area and as the market leaders in precast modular platform construction, FP McCann were approached to develop a modular precast platform system for use on piled foundations. Due to ever decreasing possession times, modular systems have gained significant traction over the last few years within the Rail sector. The FP McCann design team in conjunction with the client design team, produced a range of ‘standard’ units which could then be adapted to suit the various challenges presented at each of the stations.

The system consisted of a precast beam sitting on top of the piles, which then supported platform slabs cast in 2 different colours, with integrated coper features. This produced fully finished platform slabs which could be installed without any platform surface work being required. Other features were incorporated into the design, such as integral drainage channels, fitting for attached fencing panels and platform furniture/items as well.

The units were cast to imitate traditional platform surfaces, with a traditional grey colour and a charcoal colour section to imitate a traditional asphalt topping.

FP McCann undertook an intensive casting program, at times casting in excess of 14 platform units a day and working weekends when required, in order to meet the tight deadlines required for delivery.
