Northern Ireland based specialist civil engineer and piling contractor Dawson-Wam Ltd is constructing the earth retaining boundary wall on behalf of main building contractor Marbank Construction, and ground engineering solutions company – Geofirma Soils Engineering, is undertaking the soil stabilisation work.

The wall itself has been designed with retained heights ranging from 1.5 metres and 4.4 metres and the piled galvanised steel king posts have been specially fabricated to facilitate the connection of anchor bars in sections with greater retained heights. In addition to the king posts, over 300 sheet piles will be installed as deadman anchors for the required tie bars.

Dawson-Wam has chosen FP McCann as their supply partner for the prestressed precast concrete wall panels. The 160mm thick and 200mm thick horizontal concrete panels were supplied by FP McCann’s Lydney precast facility. Work commenced in April 2019.

The steel king post structure is being fitted with 647 no. standard height horizontal precast panels and 61 no. non-standard height specials. As the wall is being installed, soil is being backed-up to each section to achieve the required site levels, prior to ground works commencing for the industrial buildings work.

Once complete, the wall will form the perimeter boundary surrounding the new development.

Commenting on the project Site Agent for Dawson Wam, Simon Wilson, says, “The robust prestressed concrete walling panels from FP McCann are the obvious choice to complement our king post piled system, with speed of construction, strength and durability of the finished wall being key benefits in helping us deliver the overall build programme to the client on schedule and to provide a long-term soil retention and boundary solution.”
