Title: A5WTC Phase 1A Archaeological Investigation
Location: Phase 1A is a 14.8km stretch from New Buildings to north of Strabane
Client: Department for Infrastructure
Phase 1A of the A5WTC scheme involves the construction of offline dualling extending for approximately 14.8km. The archaeological investigation works are to be undertaken in two stages, the stages informed by the priority of each area in relation to the construction of the Main Works.
Stage 1 comprises of areas which have been identified as being of high priority to the Main Works construction programme with Stage 2 covering the remaining areas.
The archaeological resolution of Stage 1 and Stage 2 areas will be completed in three phases as follows:
- Phase 1 includes site evaluation works, comprising localised strip, map and recording, trial trenching and building recording. Phase 1 has been designed to investigate the potential impact of the scheme on recorded and unrecorded archaeological remains, and to assist in the development of an appropriate scope of work to mitigate the effect of the scheme by archaeological excavation and recording of any archaeological remains which are revealed.
- Phase 2 is the resolution of the arisings from the Phase 1 works which may include trench extension.
- Phase 3 is the assessment, analysis, reporting, publication and archiving of the archaeological discoveries of Phases 1 and 2 where appropriate.
In order to undertake the archaeological investigation works, ancillary works shall also be carried out. The ancillary works shall entail the erection of fencing and gates as well as clearance of hedges to allow the construction of temporary accesses. Accesses off public roads are to be reinstated upon completion of the works.
