FP McCann complete N14 Lifford to R264 Pavement Strengthening and Associated Minor Works

FP McCann has now completed the 2016 N14 Lifford Bridge to R264 pavement strengthening and associated minor works contract.

This project involved inlaying and overlaying the existing pavement on a 2km section of the N14 national primary route. The major elements of work included installing a new water main and drainage system. Also, new kerbing and resurfacing of footpaths. A key part of the works to maintain traffic flows on this busy route included the establishment, maintenance and removal of traffic management.

The works also included:

  • The laying of a 1965m water-main along the road edge approx, 700m of which was installed by directional drilling with remainder being open cut with full trench reinstatement. Associated elements included installation of a magnetic flow meter and approximately 50 service water connections
  • A new storm drainage system consisting of 600mm, 450mm and 900mm reinforced concrete pipes and also 2 new headwalls
  • Re-kerbing and re-surfacing of 3847m² of bitmac footpaths
  • Cold milling, laying base, binder and SMA surface course on approx 16000m² of the N14
  • Overlaying road surface with regulating binder and HRA surface course of approx 4000m² of the N14
  • Creation of 3 new traffic calming and pedestrian centre Islands
  • The installation of tactile paving
  • New boundary fencing
  • Crash barrier
  • Re-grading and re-seeding verges

While carrying out works we liaised with various service providers such as ESB, Eircom, Airtricity, DCC sewer and water main to protect and maintain whilst installing the new water main and drainage.

The N14 road is used by approximately 20,000 vehicles each day. All the works carried out while maintaining 2 way traffic on the carriageway at all times. Some of the surfacing works had to be completed at night between the hours of 19:00 and 07:00 at which time we were able to close one lane and work under stop and go.

We also liaised with the local residents and businesses keeping them informed of the works and incorporating there requirements to minimise disruption.
