Newcastle Promenade

Project: Newcastle Promenade

Client: Newry, Mourne and Down Council

 

Reconstruction of a Victorian promenade and seafront to integrate the town with the beach and make it a welcoming space for local residents and tourists. Works included:

  • Exposed aggregate concrete paths and curved ‘wave’ stone steps
  • Hardwood Slip Resistant Decked boardwalks and viewing areas created providing a link between town centre, the promenade and the beach
  • Feature design and build Verendeel truss footbridge spanning 50m over the Shimna River
  • Soft landscaping- perennial and herbaceous planting areas, reinforced grass areas used to create grass dunes and ripple areas
  • Wave return wall and slipways
  • Curved ‘wave’ stone steps
  • Street Furniture comprised of the installation of stainless steel cycle stands, bins, demountable bollards, seats and parapets
  • Feature lighting including Stainless Steel Laser Cut columns with LED lights

This scheme won a Civic Trust Award (2007) for best Public Realm project and an Award from the Irish Landscape Institute.
